My apologies for disappearing from the blogging world last week - and not even leaving you with any pre-written posts. What was I thinking??? Sorry about that...
Last week was really a wonderful week, so I wanted to share some pictures with you. And since I missed a week of blogging, I figured a long post was ok :)
Dork that I am, I made a sign for my door before Yoav arrived. I know the pictures are hard to see, but that would be a sukkah on the bottom right corner, some White House building on the middle sheet, and a tree with orange, yellow, and red leaves on the left-hand sheet. I'm such an artist.
On Monday (also known as Columbus Day around here), Y and I went home to my parents' house. On the way home, we stopped at the golf course in Newton to look at the beautiful folliage. Here's a picture that I made Yoav take in front of the pretty trees.
Putting up my parents' sukkah, took about 2 minutes. Decorating it took a bit longer. Here's mom and Yoav decorating.
And here are my adorable cousins helping to decorate the sukkah with dried pasta.
Once they were done decorating, they played on the swings, ran around the yard, and ate potato chips. Here's a beautiful picture of Josh, Summer, and Shea sitting on the swing:
Then came two days of chag - so there were no pictures from me. We had many meals at Meg and Eli's sukkah. On Tuesday afternoon, a bunch of camp people came over and joined us for lunch. It was all lots of fun.
Bright and early on Thursday morning, we flew to Washington D.C. When I say that we walked all over Washington, I mean, literally, ALL over Washington! Perhaps thats what happens when you don't bother to bring a map or plan your day in an order that makes sense :)
Off the plane, we took a long bus ride to the....subway station! Three modes of transportation (four if you count my car to the airport in Boston) all before noon!
We started at the Holocaust Museum. I didn't take any pictures. It was a different experience since the last time I was there. I haven't been there in years (probably not since 8th grade) - and since then, I've been to both the old and the new Yad Vashem multiple times. The museums are very different from each other. This one has a distinctly American feel - which I suppose makes sense. But I felt the Israel part lacking. Although, that said, Israel has always had a specific way of "spinning" the Holocaust (to be more triumphant in the end, instead of just wallowing in the destruction), so perhaps it was ok not to have the uplifting "from tragedy to triumph" narrative.
From there we walked to see the Washington Monument:
Then we walked the National Mall to get to the Capitol Building:
(This is one of my favorite pictures from the whole trip)
After that, we decided to walk to the White House. We found a random Israeli on a street corner, and walked with him up the length of Pennsylvania Ave. Together we found one side of the White House.
And then we sat on some steps, chatted, gave our tired feet a rest, and waited to meet up with Allison. I was sure she was going to find us fast asleep on the steps!
But we regained some energy and walked to meet her when she was ready. We walked to the other side of the White House and took some more great pictures.
(note that this is a nice variation on our regular "side by side" picture - one of these days I'm going to learn how to photoshop ourselves to be in front of other famous places. You'd never know the difference, since we so regularly take the same picture!)
Here's one of me and Allison:
She took us to Eli's Kosher Deli - I had...what else? Chicken fingers and french fries! Delicious!
From there, we walked back to the memorials that we had bipassed earlier. Dad had recommended seeing them at night - and he wasn't wrong. They were gorgous.
Here is the WWII memorial at night. We hung around there for a while, taking pictures, sitting down near the water, etc.
Here's another creative picture of me and Y - we're so adventerous, two non-typical pictures in one trip! ;)
Here's the part of the memorial for soldiers who died from MA.
After visiting the Lincoln memorial and hanging out with Allison later that night, the next morning we went to the National Air and Space Museum. It was a bit less impressive than I remembered it being - but its one of those "must-do's", so we did it!
We came back to Boston right before Shabbat started and enjoyed the day here. Saturday night we had what might seem like a typical date for you - but since we live across the world from each other, chinese food and the movies are a novelty for us!
All in all, it was a wonderful week! Thanks for reading the post and letting me relive it by writing about it.
