Who should be a Jew? (a new twist on an old question)
There are many people in this country who want to put a limit on the people who can call themselves Jews. The "Who is a Jew?" question has been asked for decades, and I usually avoid the topic. But after reading this article in Ha'aretz, I have a new answer for this question.
Let's reconsider the Jewish status of this man, Avrohom Mondrowitz. I'm infuriated that he could be my neighbor, and even more enraged that he used the Law of Return and his status as a Jew to escape the legal system in the States. It is Israel's MORAL DUTY to extradite him as fast as possible, renounce any legal status he may have as a resident of this country (past, present, or future), cut him off from the Jewish people entirely, and take a clear stand on the issue of sexual abuse.
We had a heated argument the other day in a class of mine, over the prohibition in Leviticus of "mishkav zekhar" (men lying with other men). My teacher said, "Its forbidden! You can't change the Torah! It is a to'evah, and punishable by death!" (ok, that was a paraphrase - she didn't actually say that word for word). And I said, "we need to understand what the Torah meant - its referring to a single act, not an entire sexual orientation!".
Regardless of the reading of the text that you prefer, this guy is, without a doubt, violating a Torah prohibition - he deserves any punishment that he gets - and if justice isn't done in this world, I have faith that God will take care of it in the next.
